Jeff Gipson (Director) and Jose Luis Gomez Dias (Lead Software Engineer, VR/AR) discuss the design, challenges, collaborative workflows, and technological execution that were essential to the creation of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ VR short film “Myth: A Frozen Tale.” Explore the incorporation of various VR techniques and technology into the production pipeline as a means of facilitating the team’s ambitious creative goals.

Jeff Gipson (Director) first joined the studio in 2013 as a lighting apprentice on “Frozen.” His other Disney credits include “Big Hero 6,” “Zootopia,” “Moana,” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet.” Gipson made his directing debut with Walt Disney Animation Studios’ first virtual reality short film, “Cycles” for which he won a Lumiere™ Award in 2019. He recently debuted his second VR short film “Myth: A Frozen Tale,” at the world premiere of “Frozen 2.”
Born in Raton, NM and raised in Trinidad, CO, Gipson had a strong sense of adventure that he expressed through drawing and his love for BMX riding.
At age 14, he was the lead advocate for building the first skatepark in his hometown, inspiring him to study architecture. Gipson received a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
While pursuing a master’s degree in architecture, Gipson decided to combine his skills in 3D modeling from building skateparks and apply it to filmmaking. He was an intern at Pixar Animation Studios and Laika Studios before finding his way to Disney. He now lives in Los Angeles and still goes back home to Trinidad to ride the first skatepark he helped build.

Jose Luis Gomez Diaz (Lead Software Engineer, AR/VR) first started his Disney career in April 2013 as a software Engineer for “Frozen.” Born and raised in Salamanca, Spain, Gomez grew up with a love of physics and problem solving.
Gomez gravitated toward a career in gaming until films like “Jurassic Park” and “Terminator 2” inspired him to combine his love for physics and computer programming into visual effects. He worked on his first animated feature in 2003 at Bren Entertainment, developing software for El Cid: The Legend” and developed tools at Illion Animation studios before transitioning to visual effects companies as Framestore and Digital Domain to work on films such as “Gravity,” “Clash of the Titans,” and “Ender’s Game.”
In addition to “Frozen,” Gomez’s other Disney Animation feature credits include “Big Hero 6,” “Zootopia,” “Moana,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Frozen 2.” He is most recently known for developing new techniques in real time and AR/VR storytelling for the studio as the Lead Software Engineer for AR/VR. Gomez was VR Lead for Disney Animation’s award-winning first VR Short film, “Cycles,”  and became VR Technology Supervisor on “Myth: A Frozen Tale” in 2019.
